I've been in pretty much all the possible scenarios, from work I disliked but tolerated to work I hated to work I mostly liked and even sometimes loved. That said, I saved as much as I possibly could and retired at 55. Everything about my life is better now.

The forty hour work week is not a natural law. And there's really no way to spin working to make someone else rich as a fulfilling way to live your life. There are other ways to make a living but they take imagination and more than likely a very frugal mindset. It also helps to be mostly non-materially motivated.

Money can't buy happiness, real friendships or true love. Most people can be distracted enough by it though to let it stand in for those things that would make their lives truly worth living.
